Photography Challenge 1

This is my first ever challenge in the photography thread on BG. Here's the challenge:

**********Have you found your 'style'? What do you love photographing? What photographers do you follow, admire, look to for inspiration? Where do I want be in 1 year and then in 5 years in photography (and for those of you not in this for a biz that's ok- just share your personal goals).

This week our challenge is to answer these questions AND share 2-3 images of your THEN (from about 1 year go) and then 2-3 of your best from NOW. If you have a blog- blog it. If you don't- just share here. *********

I've enjoyed taking pictures for many years now, but I only started attempting "professional" pictures a year ago. It all started when I wanted to get newborn shots made of Ashlin (my youngest) and my husband said no, that it was a waste of money. I knew she was only going to be that small once, so I got a white sheet, the boppy, and my little Sony Cyber-shot and started trying to get shots of Ashlin as I'd seen by doing an internet search of newborn poses. I was so proud of myself when I was done! I thought they turned out pretty good! From that day on, photography was my passion. I still wanted to get real professional pictures done, but I felt like if I couldn't, it would be ok because I could do it myself.

As far as what my style is, well, I don't know what I would call it. Maybe it
would be several different styles that speak to me. There are 3 people that I can't get enough of (one I actually saw from someone else's challenge today, but I saw the pictures and thought That is what I've been looking for!!! That is what I would love to do!). The first two are people who are in the photography thread, Shannon and Amy. I don't know what it is about their work, but it just makes me happy. For lack of a better way to explain it, their work makes my heart sing (cheesy, I know). Here are links to their work:

Amy: http://www.amymcmasterphotography.com/
The photographer I saw today (I don't know the name): http://pastelphotography.com/blog/

What do I love photographing? I love taking pictures of my kids, of course, but they are a hard subject since they never stop moving. I really like taking pictures of people, though. There is so much you can do and I love capturing emotion. My favorite place to take pictures is outdoors/natural light. I'm completely clueless on how to make indoor light look good, so natural is best for me! I love nature shots! That's definitely one of my favorite things to shoot. I adore macro, but I can't really do that without the equipment.

The next question to answer is where do I want to be in 1 year and then in 5 years. To be honest, I'm not completely sure. I know for sure that I want to master editing. I use photoscape right now. It's just a free editing program someone told me about. It's really good for beginners because it's easy to use and easy to learn, but I really want to get some kind of photoshop program. I know there is a lot more that can be done and I really want to learn it. Will I have the time to learn with two small children to take care of or the money to buy it in the first place? I don't know, but that's my goal. My other goal would be to master my camera to the best of my ability. I'll be getting a new camera in February, but unfortunately I won't be getting a dslr like I want because my husband absolutely will not cave no matter how hard I try. It's not all about the equipment, though, so I'll do the best I can with what I have. What's my goal for five years? I would love to have the dslr by that time. I'm not one hundred percent sure if I want to go pro one day, but I'm leaning that way. I guess the big thing that's holding me back is the business side of it because that kind of stuff confuses me. What I really hope is that I see a huge improvement every year in my skill. I already see a huge growth over this past year and it's very encouraging.

Ok, so the next part of the challenge is to share some pictures from a ye
ar ago and my best from now. Here you go!

Then (1 year ago) Now (1 month ago-1 week ago)

365 project: Day 060

It was absolutely BEAUTIFUL outside today!!! It was the first really fall like day we've had all year. It couldn't have made it out of the 60's (the forecast said a high of 68, but I don't know what it topped out at). We spend most of the day outside at Mamaw's house. Mamaw was putting the finishing touches on the kids new "tree"house today (all that's left is paint...rainbow colored paint if Abby (Kelsie's cousin) gets her way). Kelsie "helped" Mamaw today. It was so cute to see her so interested in helping. Hammering was her favorite. Ashlin didn't help much. She just sat on my lap looking pretty...lol.

365 project: Day 059

It was a pretty day outside today. It was sunny and in the low 70's. Fall is getting closer!!! We went out to run a few errands today and so I just snapped a few pictures of the kids. These were 2 of my favorites.

365 project: Day 058

It was another "I needed a picture so start snapping" day, but Kelsie was being cute and wanted me to take a picture of her. She has such a beautiful smile! She was lifting her shirt up...silly girl!

365 project: Day 057

It has been raining a hard steady rain all day today (I think the rain started last night). I really don't like the rain. It makes it even more of a pain to get the kids in and out of the car if we have to go somewhere (like the grocery store). We have a little creek by our apartment complex and it's always pretty low. I've never seen it flooded this way...ever. It was so high that on the way home from the grocery store, I saw a man and his 2 kids carrying a canoe and paddle up the driveway to the top of the creek...lol. Too bad I couldn't get a picture of that!

365 project: Day 056

My friend Kendra had her first baby yesterday (on Ashlins birthday!). I went to the hospital to visit. The baby's name is Addisyn Faith and she is so stinkin' cute!

365 project: Day 055

I don't have any super special pictures today. I needed a picture so I set the girls on the couch and got a few. I'm excited, though, because I learned how to do some color correcting and other things to do with the color of pictures in photoscape today that I didn't even know could be done with that program. I was able to take some of the reddish tint that I get with most of my indoor pictures out of these. (Most of the last post was fixed with my new abilities, too.) I'll be working on curves and color correction probably from here on out. I really want to get better at post processing.

365 project: Day 054

Today was Daniel's and my 4th wedding anniversary. YAY! We didn't do anything for us, but we took the girls to the park for a little while. Thank goodness I had my camera (I almost didn't bring it because I didn't know we were going to the park). The 1st picture is Ashlin is ready to go in her new "big girl" carseat (since she's been at the weight requirement for four months now...lol). So I realize that I have a real problem in that I have the inability to post only 1 picture. I'm going to have a lot to look through at the end of the year! :o)

365 project: Day 053

I wasn't impressed with the quality of the pictures from Ashlin's birthday party. The lighting wasn't good, so when the sun poked out from behind the clouds for the first time in at least a week, I took advantage and had a 1year photo shoot. Kelsie wanted to be in some pictures too (she calls it playing dress up...lol). The 1st one is blurry because she wouldn't stop moving, but the look on her face is priceless! The 2nd is Ashlin combing her hair. I love the edit in number 6. Something about how it seems to pop. All the rest are miss Kelsie.

365 project: Day 052

Ashlin's birthday isn't until the 24th, but we had her party today. She had a lot of fun and she loved the cake. She liked opening her presents a little, but she would have rather eaten all the paper. We got her cake at Walmart and they actually did a really good job with it...I was really impressed (and it tasted amazing). Pictures 2 and 3 are of Ashlin with her Mamaw (my mother-in-law).

365 project: Day 051

I put Bella in the spare room today and closed the door. She was sticking her paws out from under the door trying to play and the girls were sitting at the door waiting for her to do it.

365 project: Day 050

I finally remembered to bring my camera with me to my mother-in-law's house so I could take pictures of her new chicks. She got them at the fair this year.

365 project: Day 049

Today's picture wasn't actually taken by me. Kelsie got my camera and started taking pictures. She got a picture of Daddy and she did a really good job. The only thing I did was edit me out of the background, sharpen, contrast, and make it black and white. Maybe she'll take after her mommy with photography...

365 project: Day 048

Ashlin decided she was going to help me with the dishes today...by climbing in the dishwasher...lol. She's so stinking cute!
